Protesters marching to Trump Tower in Manhattan the night after the election.  Yana Paskova/ New York Times

It was not a good win.  Repeating a racist oratory targeting the negative emotions of depressed Americans, Donald Trump poisoned the mind of many and managed to suppress the vote just enough to win. While Hillary Clinton has decidedly won the popular vote, Donald Trump has more electoral votes.  Sadly, Donald Trump is now considered our president-elect thus far. Yet, before we collectively proceed down that slippery slope of human denial, and start believing that a Donald Trump, who has revealed who he really is, would actually be good for our country, lest we not forget.

Adolph Hitler Was Also Elected!

Let us remember.  Of course, Donald Trump’s deceptive success is nothing new, thus nothing to congratulate in the spirit of politeness.

In 1933 during a depressed economy in Germany, Adolph Hitler was also elected by the people on a promise that Germany would again have: its place in the sun!   Remember him?  Yep, much like Donald Trump, or so it appears, Adolph Hitler was another glib con-artist who ignored the truth, tapped into the people’s despair, blamed others for Germany’s loss of power, successfully mesmerized a large following (whom he would control absolutely), and all under the dark illusion of advancing white supremacy.

Destined to nearly destroy Western civilization while virtually promising that Germany would, indeed, be great again: thankfully, Adolph Hitler and his sick government were destroyed by resolute, allied forces; but, oh, at what cost to human life and property!

Sadly, Adolph Hitler’s leadership and racially charged dogma not only started World War II but, in the process, the Nazi regime was responsible for the notorious internment and ultimate genocide of at least 5.5 million Jews and millions of other victims whom Hitler and his followers strategically deemed Untermenschen (“sub-humans”) and socially undesirable.  Moreover, untold millions of humanity either suffered profoundly or died violently during WWII, which is still considered among the deadliest conflicts in Modern History.

Today, with the seeds of extreme racism sprouting before us like weeds in a fertile field, those in power would well remember the rise and fall of Adolph Hitler and let not his horrific tragedy take root in America the beautiful.

Racism and the Insidious Southern Strategy

Before Hilter’s strategy to gain unrestrained power and rule his world, there existed the so-called Southern strategy here in the USA that dates back to the abolishment of slavery (c.1865) and the end of Reconstruction (c. 1877).  With the Modern Civil Rights Movement of the 60s, Jim Crow finally falls leaving Blacks free to vote.  And the so-called Southern Strategy emerges, a divisive tool initially used by deceptive politicians to gain political favor in the South by appealing to the racism inherent in many White voters.

Based on the ancient “divide and conquer” rule of warfare, the Southern Strategy is but a modern form of this ancient strategy that ironically feasts on the darkest illusion of white supremacy.

What is so divisive about this ancient method, when skillfully used in a thriving democracy, is that certain voters generally don’t see such as actual warfare against them rather than the opposition.  Their candidate’s insidious rhetoric gradually increases the momentum; they become confused, and ultimately rendered defenseless against it.

Sadly, at such times, this is why blocks of depressed voters either don’t vote or vote against their own interests (such as health, education and welfare, humanity’s basic need).   Being a crime against humanity, lying or otherwise deliberately misleading the public to gain votes should also be prosecuted.  But who’s to step up and protect the public?

Enters President-elect Donald Trump, and 1000s March in Protest

Seemingly the great white hope of depressed White folks (only), Trump wins the Republican primary, much to his apparent surprise.  Running on pure anger and racial resentment, the deceptive Southern Strategy works in the general election also, and Donald Trump becomes president-elect.  Much to everybody’s shock and dismay worldwide, including the loquacious Mr. Trump.

Eventually, Trump’s ardent supporters will wake up and realize they have been hoodwinked, bamboozled or just plain lied to in general.

Meanwhile, the day after, thousands of those who could see through Donald’s toxic rhetoric hit the streets protesting into the night.  According to news reports, universal protests continue.

See a thoughtful perspective by New York Times columnist David Brooks titled, The View from Trump Tower.

See, Anti-Trump Protests Simmer Across U.S., With New Focus: “Organizers in Manhattan carried signs in English and Spanish saying things like: ‘Hate won’t make us great,’ and chanted ‘We are here to stay.”’

Also see, Day Five of Anti-Trump Protests Continued in a Number of Cities, which notes that Sen. Corey Booker, while on Meet the Press, basically says he would not be talking to Chuck Todd on TV but not for our right to protest, and then says: “God bless the protestors.”

Impeachment Predicted

Wishful thinking perhaps?  Nonetheless, this Washington Post article by Peter W. Stevenson is interesting: ‘Prediction’ Prof Allan Lichtman, who predicted that Donald Trump would barely win the election, later makes another prediction based on an educated hunch rather than data analysis and says among other things:

“They don’t want Trump as president, because they can’t control him. He’s unpredictable…  And I’m quite certain Trump will give someone grounds for impeachment, either by doing something that endangers national security or because it helps his pocketbook.”

Knowing the Donald, he probably would cause his own impeachment or resign given his well-known lack of self-discipline when challenged.

In David Brooks’ above cited column titled, The View from Trump Tower, the veteran journalist shared this observation concerning the likely impeachment or resignation of Donald Trump:

“Trump’s bigotry, dishonesty and promise-breaking will have to be denounced. We can’t go morally numb. But he needs to be replaced with a program that addresses the problems that fueled his ascent.  After all, the guy will probably resign or be impeached within a year. The future is closer than you think.”

Millions Petition the Electoral College

According to credible news reports, including this one titled: Millions Sign Petition Urging Electoral College to Elect Hillary Clinton, by Michael Walsh, Reporter for Yahoo News, many have renewed hope despite the odds. Though a long-shot, as such has yet to happen in American politics, there is always a chance given the bizarre outcome of this election season.  Americans and the world deserve a good U.S. president.  The Electoral College is set to vote on December 19.  And so we continue praying for our country.

My Humble Advice to Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, and the Rest

Given Hillary Clinton’s willingness to do the right thing and work extra hard to gain the necessary experience to offer her services and high intellect as president of the United States, I say hats off to this great woman of proven integrity who took the job seriously, endured years of the Republicans relentless attacks on her character, and yet, in the end, graciously conceded after unfairly losing the election.  Right now, it is America’s loss my dear Mrs. Clinton (not yours) and we miss hearing your eloquent command of the English language in particular.

My advice to you Hillary is simple: Forgive yourself, if you haven’t already, for any mistakes you think you may have made in the process and continue moving forward.  Thanks for hanging in there on our behalf.

“We Don’t Want to Go Back to Hate”

To Donald Trump, one day, hopefully before it’s too late, you will find that you really are not yet ready for the job of President of the United Sates that takes, among other things, the ability to be humbly guided by the willingness to do the right thing.  It takes a long, long time to realize the importance of this spiritual power, and that’s with deliberate effort on our part.  Donald you done wrong by exploiting hatred and racism in order to win votes, which disregarded the moral intent of our U.S. Constitution.

Hence, why thousands of anti-Trump protestors are still marching in the streets, poignantly saying: “We don’t want to go back to hate.”

My advice to you Donald is to first accept the fact that the adoration you so obviously need cannot be realized by a demanding spirit, and that’s just the way it is.  Next, the greatest thing that you can do to right this horrible wrong is to resign now, and let your opponent take her rightful place as our next U.S. president.  Otherwise Donald, you’re on your own. And it ain’t looking good for the Trump brand right now. Please be advised and thanks for listening.

As to The Rest

Namely, to the Republicans and Democrats: You both made terrible mistakes as well and have been doing so for a long, long time.  But you can also do better before it’s too late!  In fact, you must if our country is to get back on its proper course and survive.  You know what to do: Start by putting the people’s health, education and welfare first, even before your own careers and finances, and the rest will surely follow.  And just that’s the way it is in a real democracy.

Meanwhile, let us remember to carry in our hearts and mind, these instructive words from one of our country’s central founders:

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”  ~President John Adams, c. 1798

In peace and harmony, let us pray constantly for the preservation of our American democracy!

“You cannot sell your soul, but you can sell your awareness of it.”  ~A Modern Adage

With all the natural beauty in the world that feeds our very soul, seeing someone abandon their soul for worldly gain is not pleasant to write about. Yet we must; if not for our self, at least for our children who deserve a president that will ensure the tone for their advancement.

It is not only a president’s policies that we should question, but we must also give pause to the president’s character. As such significantly influences the quality of life in our society and the world. According to the polls, we have two of the most hated candidates ever for president! Namely: Donald Trump, the GOP’s presumptive nominee, and Hillary Clinton, the current Democratic Primary frontrunner.

Meanwhile, making matters worse: Enters California Gov. Jerry Brown who endorses Hillary Clinton, a proven hypocrite that is still under investigation by the FBI concerning her dubious email usage while Secretary of State.

Gov. Jerry Brown and Fmr. President Bill Clinton’s Faustian Deal

Jean_Paul_Laurens_-_Dr__Fausto

Dr. Fausto by Jean Paul Laurens (Wikipedia/Public Domain)

The German legend of Faust (a factitious character) is about a thriving, yet very unhappy scholar who abandons his soul for worldly power. Having lost his awareness of true happiness, Faust descends into insatiable pleasures and corrupts his thinking in the process. Though the so-called devil is not real, but a personified symbol of bad Karma, henceforth it is told that Faust sold his soul to the devil. In Johann von Goethe’s classic play depicting the Faust legend (c.1802), Dr. Faust’s tormented soul is ultimately saved by true love.

Today, some well-established folks still make pacts with the so-called devil. However, it now appears that Gov. Jerry Brown and Fmr. President Bill Clinton made a Faustian deal with each other some years ago (as do others in politics unfortunately).

Despite their bitter history since 1992 when Jerry Brown and Bill Clinton exchanged heated insults during their opposing bids for president, in 2010 Fmr. President Bill Clinton endorses Jerry Brown’s bid for governor of California.

Fast forward to a few days before the 2016 California Democratic Primary, Jerry Brown and Bill Clinton meet at the governor’s mansion for over an hour to “talk politics”. Soon Gov. Brown endorses Hillary Clinton (Bill’s wife) who’s in a very close race with challenger Bernie Sanders. Thus, Hillary now begins a radical campaign in California.

In his ‘Open Letter to California Democrats and Independents’ Gov. Brown states he is, “Deeply impressed with how well Bernie Sanders has done.”

Yet, Gov. Brown also states that: “Hillary Clinton has convincingly made the case that she knows how to get things done and has the tenacity and skill to advance the Democratic agenda.” Sadly, this seems more rhetoric than fact! Exactly what Hillary Clinton has done that really helped humanity remains a big mystery.

In earlier debates, Hillary Clinton liked to mention that Miriam Wright Edelman, an attorney and founder of the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF), helped her career. Once saying: “You know, when I left law school, my first job was with the Children’s Defense Fund.”

Yet, as First Lady, Hillary advocated for welfare reform, upsetting her former colleagues at the CDF. Despite warnings by their senior officials that such would plunge over a million children into poverty, “the Clinton administration worked with Republicans to gut social services.”

(See in-depth article: “Hillary Clinton often boasts about helping children, but she betrayed them as First Lady,” Salon.com, Oct 2015.)

Seems the Clintons also betrayed their good friends, Miriam and her husband, Peter Edelman a legal scholar. Along with two other senior officials on welfare policy, Peter Edelman resigned from the Clinton administration relative to the 1996 scrapping of the welfare program. That also cut the classic, Aid to Families with Dependent Children (ADC), which was created by the Social Security Act under the New Deal.

The day it is signed, Miriam Wright Edelman releases this statement: “President Clinton’s signature on this pernicious bill makes a mockery of his pledge not to hurt children.”

Peter Edelman would later lament: “I have devoted the last 30-plus years to doing whatever I could to help in reducing poverty in America. I believe the recently enacted welfare bill goes in the opposite direction.”

In closing, the above Salon article states: “Today, over two decades later, Hillary Clinton’s policies remain conservative. She continues to sit at the right-wing of the Democratic Party. Clinton may have claimed in the debate that she is a Progressive, but her actions have long contradicted her words.”

Hillary Clinton Today

No significant change really. Sadly, Hillary Clinton’s refusal to honor a previously scheduled California debate with Bernie Sanders is not only an “insult” to California voters, who need to hear from their candidates on the issues, but speaks volumes to who she really is. Instead, Hillary attacks Donald Trump. Though it makes for a dramatic news cycle, the polls show that Bernie Sanders continues to defeat Donald Trump nationwide.

What is so sinister about Gov. Brown’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton and a clear betrayal of the people’s trust is that in reality, Mrs. Clinton is a terrible candidate. Her negatives are off the charts and her known disregard for the truth is abysmal.

Besides, the ongoing FBI investigation of her private email server as Sec of State, Hillary Clinton repeatedly lied about having approval for her private email server as if it were a widely accepted practice in the state department.

Even after the State Dept IG contradicts her boldface lies that private emails were allowed, Hillary continues the lie! After checking the key points in the IG’s published report, MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski states: “I really don’t want to be the one delivering this, but I got to tell you, this is really hard to believe.  It feels like she’s lying straight out.”

Frankly, there ought to be a law against lawmakers lying to the public, particularly in order to gain votes! If they can’t respect the truth, how are they going to have the strength of character to uphold the truth and thus maintain order in our society?

A Quasi Monarchist Perhaps?

With life and limb for self-rule, devout insurgents defeated a powerful English monarch during the American Revolution. Thus, our U.S. presidency cannot be sold or inherited!

Yet, by hook or by crook, seems the Clintons have been running for president since Bill Clinton termed out. Having been married to a president and touted his policies (many a total disaster), seems the Clinton’s believe that Hillary Clinton, whether or not qualified, is entitled to be our president! Sadly, it appears they have convinced some well-liked democrats as well.

Of course, this is not only against the spirit of our U.S. Constitution but it also sets a dangerous course for a termed-out, treacherous president to sneak back into the Oval Office. Who, in a pinch, would surly sell his kingdom for a horse! A closet monarchist indeed.

Hence, there ought to be a law against a spouse being elected U.S. president after their husband (or wife) leaves office! Oh be careful America, be real careful here.

A Verified Bigot

Many are convinced that Donald Trump, the GOP’s presumptive nominee, is not only a potentially dangerous leader that must not be elected, but a proven bigot and liar as well.

Despite Donald Trump’s racist remarks about a sitting judge in charge of a personal law suit against him, the public’s protests at his campaign rallies (some violent), and his usual racists rants, well-liked Republicans are now falling in lockstep behind him. Including House Speaker Paul Ryan, who recently endorsed Donald Trump for president.

Of course, many Republicans have been running on fear and racial hatred for years. Thus, the GOP’s covert racism has now come full circle in the nefarious rise of Donald Trump!

Sadly, both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have misused racism to sway voters in their favor. While Trump exploits racism to indulge racist voters, Clinton exploits racism to pander to racism’s victims. Sadder still, neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton’s actions (past or present) show a genuine regard for the advancement or the preservation of humanity.

Consequently, of this we can be sure: If either one of these imposters are elected (God forbid), there will be more of the same gridlock in Washington, or worse. Clearly, the signs are there!

Lest we not forget, Adolph Hitler also exploited bigotry in his rise to conquest and power!

Bernie Sanders: A Sincere Trailblazer

Thankfully we do have a choice in Election 2016. Thus, we no longer have to choose between “the lesser of two evils” as before.

One of the main concerns of our country’s Founders was to safeguard the balance of powers in our government. Without such, anarchy would surly follow, or worse.

Though Bernie Sanders’ sincere messages of peace, prosperity and justice for all is nothing new and is quite attainable with the right intention, seems “the establishment” (those in power) has lost its way. Yet, these are the very same principles upon which our country was found.

Thus, in this world, money alone cannot sustain us or matters of the heart. Yet, when we balance the needs of both mind and heart, not only can we sustain our great country, but we save the world in the process. Which way America?

Praises to Muhammad Ali “the Greatest” (1/17/1942–6/3/2016), Peace Be Upon Him.

Election 2016 Update: June 8th, Hillary Clinton took her victory lap last night, too bad it was won by nefarious means. Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump would likely impede our country’s progress. Many are praying for the evolution of our country, a more advanced president. The struggle continues. Peace to all!

“Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart.” ~Anne Frank

In many ways, seems it is still the best of times and the worst of times as Charles Dickens observes in “A Tale of Two Cities” ca. 1859. Such is the duality of human life we all must conquer one day. Hence the old adage: “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”

Considered a key world leader, yet Pope Francis brought the most humble gift of all to the U.S. during his six-day visit here (22-28 September 2015). This being the gift of Unconditional Love, as taught by Jesus the Christ, that Pope Francis gladly shared with all he met. Thanks Pope Francis, we love you back!

Though not of the Catholic faith per se, I followed Pope Francis on television, prayed with him during mass and keep his speech transcripts for study. His unscripted speech at the Festival of Families is my favorite: “God is good, God is beautiful, God is true,” said the Pope among other good things.

Once after prayers with the Pope on TV, though I had forgotten about them, I soon recover some precious computer files I thought were lost forever, truly a miracle.

Yet, my heart could not accept canonizing Fr. Serra; so I inadvertently missed that part of Pope Francis’s Mass celebrations.

Upon the Pope’s departure to Rome, I teared up as he boarded his plane and prayed for his safe return home. Despite the Church’s flawed decision to canonize Fr. Serra who allegedly mistreated his Native American converts and himself. As our mom use to say: “Two wrongs don’t make a right,” but more about that later.

The next morning, I awaken missing the Pope’s very kind face and tireless humanity being shown on TV. In recalling visions of all the grateful people he touched, it felt like I had been on an extraordinary vacation for sure. Knowing that lives were miraculously changed during this Pope’s sacred visit made me all the more joyful.

Remembering Anne Frank and Family

Born Anneliese Marie Frank on 12 June 1929, young Anne Frank died in a Nazi concentration camp (Bergen-Belsen) in February 1945, age 15. According to witnesses, within days of each other both Anne and her sister Margot, age 19, succumbed to typhus, which was rampant. This occurred shortly before the Allies broke through enemy lines and liberated the disease-infested camps.

Anne Frank, 1942

Yet, Anne’s natural zest for life, her self-determination and remarkable intellect is her real story here that lives on through her renowned dairy, first published in 1947 as “The Diary of a Young Girl” by way of her father, Otto Frank, the only survivor of her immediate family.

In January 1945 her mother, Edith Frank, died of starvation in Auschwitz-Birkenau, age 44.

In 1980, Otto Frank dies in Basel (Switzerland), age 91. Thanks to her father’s dedicated efforts, Anne Frank’s story continues. Thus, “The Diary of Anne Frank” has inspired many, such as John F. Kennedy and Nelson Mandela.

At the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, President Kennedy declares: “No place is more compelling than that of Anne Frank…her humor, her humanity and her hope illuminate the hearts of men heavily clouded by the apparent willingness of those who seek power and domain over the soul of man to again deprive people of the right to live in peace, tolerance and freedom.” Her diary is “a gift that will survive her enemies,” John F. Kennedy, 1961.

On Robben Island, some of us read Anne Frank’s Diary. We derived much encouragement from it. It kept our spirits high and reinforced our confidence in the invincibility of the cause of freedom and justice,” Nelson Mandela, 1994.

In Hollywood’s multi-award winning films “The Diary of Anne Frank” and “Judgment at Nuremberg” (recently shown during Yom Kippur, a high Jewish holiday), we are poignantly reminded to first be aware of our sacred duty towards each other and act accordingly.

Being Jewish, Anne Frank and her family were sheltered by very courageous friends during the systemic extermination of those targeted by the madness of Nazism to justify its very dark and twisted ideology of world domination, which nearly destroyed Western civilization.

Sadly, after two years in hiding, someone turned them in. The Frank family and their fellow refugees were arrested and deported to the Nazi concentration camps where most died.

The Nuremberg Trials

Today, Adolph Hitler is considered the most evil person ever, thus quickly dismissed from national debate as if a man such as this was an anomaly forever defeated. Yet, the fact is, no one alone could possibly have brought about such universal atrocities without plenty of mutual help. So we best wake up and recognize!

While Adolph Hitler was the glorified mouthpiece for the Nazi party, he had plenty of willing helpers along the way; including society’s elite experts who were equally prone to evil! Hitler’s cohorts included prominent leaders of science, economics, the military, the judiciary, and, of course, the political realm.

Confronted with the horrific realities in the Nazi concentration camps after World War II ended, the Allied nations set about to prosecute those leaders responsible for the European Holocaust and other war crimes. Military tribunals were established in the city of Nuremberg Germany, ultimately known as the Nuremberg Trials.

In the film “Judgment at Nuremberg,” a fictionalized account of the Judges’ Trial in 1947 led by a U.S. tribunal to try those jurists allegedly responsible for the judicial acts that legalized the Nazis’ systemic destruction of humanity, for me the message is simple yet profound:

Those allegedly involved in such horrific crimes against humanity, either directly or in silent compliance, routinely claimed they never suspected such was happening.

Of course, the frequent stench from the burning ovens that drifted endlessly and the violent export of thousands of their neighbors could not be denied. Yet most did anyway, despite the danger of human denial that typically keeps us from forgiving our past mistakes.

Thankfully, it was Anne Frank’s humanity in the midst of relentless inhumanity that inspires us to move toward a higher state of mind, which is beyond pain and shame.

Remembering Father Junípero Serra

Unlike the overall inspiration inherent in the Anne Frank story, for me it is rather difficult to remember Fr. Serra without experiencing the deep sorrow inherent in his story.

150430124725-01-junipero-serra-img-8598-jpg-exlarge-169

Friar Junipero Serra

Years ago, my introduction to Fr. Serra began with a history of the Spanish-Catholic missions along California’s beautiful coastline. To me, the Junípero Serra story was depressing then and now, despite the celebrated return of the swallows to San Juan Capistrano annually.

San Juan Capistrano Mission Basilica

San Juan Capistrano Mission Basilica

Father Serra allegedly found nine of the twenty-one missions in California, including the Mission of San Juan Capistrano, supposedly to bring the Catholic faith to Native Americans. Of course, those of us able to discern between unity and conquest tend to see Friar Serra’s canonization quite differently.

It’s always the same really: the indigenous people are first deemed inferior or “savage” in need of salvation by the intended colonizer, and then comes their priests in priestly vestments. Some are very sincere, some very ambitious. Yet all are blinded by their self-righteous contempt of other people and their cultures, as erroneously taught by their church.

Thus, rather than respect the original people and their culture, as Jesus once demonstrated, the Catholic Church willingly became an agent of destruction in a distant land. Herein lies the inherent sorrow in Fr. Sierra’s story, which seems a veiled guilt that has yet to be recognized and ultimately healed.

Worse Than an Apology

In a fiery CNN Opinion article titled, “Junípero Serra No Saint” by Simon Moya-Smith of the Oglala Lakota Nation and culture editor at Indian Country Today, the author reiterates a seemly heartfelt apology made by the Pope recently:

“I say this to you with regret: Many grave sins were committed against the native people of America in the name of God,” he said. “I humbly ask forgiveness, not only for the offense of the church herself, but also for crimes committed against the native peoples during the so-called conquest of America,” Pope Francis in Bolivia, July 2015.

Of course, even the humblest of apologies by a beloved person is not always enough, particularly without a sincere effort to make the necessary corrections. Sadly, such emptiness feels more like an unintended slap in the face rather than a well-intentioned apology!

As Mr. Moya-Smith pointedly states in his article: “We are not asking the papacy for an apology. We ask for the repeal of the papal edicts that justified the theft of Native American lands and the persecution of our people. Soothing words just aren’t enough.”

On Democracy Now, a radio show titled: “Native Groups Protest Pope Francis’ Canonization of Junípero Serra…,” Valentin Lopez, chair of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, is its guest. In his own words, Chmn. Lopez explains the erroneous thinking behind the historic papal edicts (bulls) in dispute; the following is taken from the show’s transcript:

“The documents of discovery were documents that were issued—were papal bulls. That means they’re basically the word of God, given by the popes in the mid to late 1400s and very early 1500s. The popes issued a number of papal bulls that said that it was—that the indigenous people are pagans, savages and heathens, that the indigenous people have no soul, indigenous people are the enemies of Christ, that we should be cast into perpetual slavery, and that all our property and our possessions should be taken. And that right there was the basis for the conquering and conquest of much of the world, including, India, Indonesia, the Pacific Islands and all of the Americas,” Valentin Lopez, Democracy Now, 9/23/ 2015.

Valentin Lopez at the UN/Native News Online

“Valentin Lopez opposes the canonization of Serra. Courtesy of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues,” Native News Online.

Being a descendant of African slaves in America, the erroneous religious doctrine espoused in the historic papal edicts in question is no surprise having the same history.

Despite the recent detailed letter to Pope Francis by Valentin Lopez, and other Native Americans protesting the canonizing of Friar Serra, Pope Francis declares Junípero Serra a saint.

Known for his great humanity, did Pope Francis have a deeper reason for canonizing Fr. Serra, a symbolic attempt to cleanse the Catholic Church of its historic “sins” against Native Americans perhaps? Fear of reprisal perhaps? Or, simply not knowing of a better way?

Love Does Not Punish

Since the Dark Ages, humanity has relied on corporal punishment as a means to correct bad behavior, from the light spanking of a young child to judicial corporal punishments of adults.

Even religious aspirants have traditionally practiced self-inflicted flagellation, or other forms of physical abuse, to atone for a perceived “sin” or a stubborn bad habit. Which ultimately causes more harm than good, and confuses everybody at best.

Father Junípero Serra’s renowned story of self-flagellation and the abuses of his converts is one such example of corporal punishment sanctioned by the church as atonement for “sins”. Sadly, this sweeping error not only wronged Fr. Serra and others at the time, but future generations as well.

Thus, according to the living example of Jesus the Christ, as documented in the Holy Bible, love simply does not punish.

So, there must be a better way. And, indeed there is a better way; but, we must first let go of our ancient traditions.

For Many, A Modern Reformation is Underway!

Yet, unlike the Reformation of the 16th Century, a revolution within the Christian Church that ultimately spawned major denominations, many today are more focused on inner reform and the value of applied positive thinking rather than organized religion.

Whether churchless or an avid member of the choir, many now recognize that we do have the power to change our minds and hearts. And all without the guilt and punishment usually associated with traditional beliefs.

As St. Paul aptly wrote: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (St. Paul, Romans 12:2 NIV).

Along with the new technology that advanced global communication by leaps and bounds, great texts on positive thinking to achieve sustainable peace and real happiness are now available at nominal costs or no cost online.

My favorite text is “A Course in Miracles” (ACIM, the Course): Scribed and published here in the USA by the Foundation for Inner Peace, ca. 1976, the Course is now available in 23 different languages with registered study groups worldwide.

At times reminiscent of the great romantic mystics (think Rumi, Omar Khayyam, Kahlil Gibran and his trendy classic “The Prophet”), the Course can also be very poetic. Thus, my all-time favorite Course thought is:

“Love is not learned. Its meaning lies within itself. And learning ends when we recognize all it is not.” ~ACIM, Text 12:1-3.

ACIM is a self-study course with emphasis on Forgiveness that leads to Inner Peace and Universal Love, which works when you work with it. Heretofore taught by most religions in different forms, yet ACIM is compatible with all true religions.

A Westernized version of Jnana Yoga (knowledge through union with God), in my opinion, ACIM teaches how to access the Higher Mind, alias the Christ Mind, which is exactly where we all really want to be.

Hence: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me,” Jesus the Christ (John 14:6, KJV).

Needed, Good Agent(s) of World Change

Sadly, in canonizing Friar Serra the progressive Pope Francis disappointed a lot of good people recently, despite their sincere efforts to persuade him against it.

Nonetheless, here is hoping and praying that Pope Francis will soon became an Agent of World Change that many see as his true calling. The following two steps would be a great advancement toward world peace and reconciliation:

  • Renouncement of the Racism behind the 15th Century Papal Edicts known as the Doctrine of Discovery.  Created to justify political recovery of Spain from the Moors (“the Blacks”) and conquest of the Americas, this toxic dogma still aid the Politics of Racism that implies “people of color” are inferior to Western traditions. Now with grave results worldwide that only the Truth, which is of God, can heal.
  • Renouncement of the traditional practice of Corporal Punishment as atonement for one’s “sins” that typically engenders more guilt and self-hatred, often transferred to others, rather than true salvation.

Otherwise, without such wise intervention, the same destructive forces continue to plague the world:

  • Racism (politics at its worse),
  • Nazism (a world driven mad with fear), and
  • Terrorism (a chronic lack of hope).

Survival is virtually impossible without the following spiritual needs, and that’s just the way it is:

  • Good words to feed our minds,
  • Good deeds to nurture our humanity, and
  • Good dreams to relax, breathe, and evolve.

Meanwhile, the sacred struggle to survive continues.

As one of our great African-American poets of the Harlem Renaissance once mused:

“What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore and then run? …Or, does it explode?” ~Langston Hughes, c.1951.

In reality, we are all saints; we just have to improve our knowing.  Free the mind!
